Brookings, SD—RTI, LLC’s Diagnostic Laboratory—which focuses on animal health, food safety, milk and air quality, and seed health testing, in addition to custom-tailored special projects—announces it has upgraded its ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025:2017, the highest recognized quality standard in the world for calibration and testing laboratories. The new ISO/IEC 17025:2017 regulations build on the old, incorporating additional stipulations concerned with risk assessment and management, the recognition of threats to impartiality, the inclusion of sampling as a laboratory activity, and the implementation and utilization of decision rules, among others.
RTI’s qualification process wrapped up in September of this year, by means of an independent third-party accreditation body. The internal accreditation team was led by Sonja Van Holland (MT, ASCP), Lab Director; Jaydin Rowbotham, Lab Manager; Alesha Siegel, Quality Assurance Manager; and Julee Driver, Ph.D., as Quality Assurance Consultant. The process was smooth and unproblematic, resulting in no findings.
This accreditation affords clients a justification for the confidence they place in the test data they receive, assuring them that results are precise, accurate, and impartial, and attesting to the robustness of the comprehensive quality management system which functions as RTI’s operational framework.
RTI’s scope of accreditation covers 14 pathogen and spoilage organism detection tests as they relate to food, dairy, and environmental samples. That said, the Diagnostic Laboratory strives to apply consistent ISO/IEC 17025:2017-caliber documentation and methodology to all assays, whether or not they are included on the official scope. In the coming months, RTI will explore the development of a roadmap for scope expansion, to include additional assay offerings and recognize them as officially meeting the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standard.
